Membership

What does the bible teach and what do we believe about church membership?

We believe that all who are united to the risen and ascended Son of God are members of the church which is the body and bride of Christ, established at Pentecost and completely distinct from Israel. Its members are constituted as such regardless of membership or non-membership in the organized local churches.

(Matthew 16:16-18; Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Ephesians 1:20-23; 4:3-10; Colossians 3:14-15)

We believe, however, that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures. It is the responsibility of the local church to worship God in spirit and truth, teach the Word of God, practice love toward one another, observe the ordinances, appoint godly leaders, exercise church discipline, and evangelize the world.

(John 13:34-35; Acts 14:21-27; 20:17, 28-32; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-11)

Who can become a member at Community BIble Church?

Once a person hears the gospel of Jesus Christ, understands it, and responds in faith, they are saved from sin and condemnation and given eternal life. They are reconciled to God, declared righteous in Christ, and regenerated (born again) by the Spirit. The gospel not only brings us into relationship with God but it also brings us into relationship with one another. We are adopted by God and given a new family, the church.

(Romans 3:21-26; 5:6-11; Titus 3:3-7)

Membership in the universal church happens immediately when someone trusts in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. To become a member of CBC, we want to discern that a person understands the gospel and confesses their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. We also want to make sure that a person agrees with our core doctrinal beliefs and is willing to be under the leadership of the church and accountable to the body of believers as a whole.

What are your responsibilities as a member at cbc?

Membership provides you with the opportunity to vote on approving elders and deacons, our annual budget, and the calling of a Senior Pastor, to hold positions of leadership and teaching, and to be under the intentional care and accountability of a local body of believers.

Membership also provides you with the opportunity to be accountable to the elders to keep the Membership Covenant.
